The Charles Dickens holiday classic comes to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast, complete with vintage commercials, sound effects, and musical underscoring. A handful of radio actors bring dozens of characters to the stage as the familiar story unfolds: Three ghosts take Ebenezer Scrooge on a thrilling journey to teach him the true meaning of Christmas. The live sound effects will be performed on-stage by Foley (sound effects) artists creating the bells, footsteps, ghostly chains, and thunder effects. The Auburn Area Community Theatre presents “Kalamazoo,” by Michelle Kholos Brooks and Kelly Younger, and “Check, Please!” by Jonathan Rand.
In “Kalamazoo,” Peg and Irv, two quirky but endearing baby-boomers, bravely venture into the world of modern dating. But when these opposites attract, they discover love isn’t any easier the second time around. Winner of the Riva Shiner Comedy Award, “Kalamazoo” is a romantic comedy about life’s second act and learning you’re never too old to be young.
And as a bonus feature, AACT will present one of the most-produced American one-act plays of 2019-2020, as a companion to “Kalamazoo!” In “Check, Please!,” dating can be hard. Especially when your date happens to be a raging kleptomaniac or your grandmother’s bridge partner or a mime. “Check, Please!” follows a series of blind dinner dates that couldn’t get any worse — until they do.
